Systems Administration

Duties

Under the direction of the Senior LAN Manager, the Network & Systems Administrator II is responsible for daily administration of the network/server environment. Installs, configures, and maintains system software, monitors network performance, troubleshoots issues and deploys solutions. Plans and implements upgrades, patches, and installation of new applications and equipment. Creates and maintains a disaster recovery, security, backup and restore plan. May assist with evaluating new technologies to optimize network efficiency and performance.  Can perform major projects with little or no supervision and maintain communication with other departments and managers.  Interacts and communicates with other team members, vendors and end users.  Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
  
 

  1. Advanced management and administration of the network/systems/security hardware, software and policies – LAN, WLAN, WAN, VPN, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SSL, SSH, etc.
  2. Maintain and deploy physical and virtual Windows and Linux servers, including operating system installations, configurations, and security patches.
  3. Advanced management and administration of servers, virtual environment, SAN/NAS and Backup System, including network design, implementation and configuration.
  4. Application and infrastructure monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting, and escalation.
  5. Creates and maintains IT Documentation of servers, network, procedures, and step-by-step instructions.
  6. Provides Tier 3 support for PC Technicians.
  7. Works with Senior LAN Manager to research, establish, and deploy security, change management, and IT policies.
  8. Maintains and assists with configuration and operation of networking infrastructure.
  9. Researches and recommends innovative, and where possible, automated approaches to system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  10. Performs ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, troubleshooting, and resource optimization  required.
  11. Monitors and enhances performance, security, and testing of backups, disaster recovery, and business continuity.
  12. Excellent written and verbal skills and an ability to work with others as part of a team.
  13. Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduate of an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field and a minimum of three years of experience in Information Technology as a LAN Manager, Network Administrator or Systems Administrator.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  2. Must have a strong hands-on/technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows technologies such as Exchange Server, Windows Server, and Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, WSUS and RDP; knowledge of core network technologies such as LAN/WAN, subnets, firewalls, APNs/VPNs, SSL, HTTP, FTP,  routers/switches and wireless. Must have a working knowledge of other IT infrastructure technologies like storage area networks (SAN), virtualization, fiber optics, VOIP and Telco; good understanding of user environment management, including desktops/laptops, profile management, software delivery, windows updates, anti-virus, imaging, etc.  Prefer CCNA/CCNP and/or MCSA/MCSE and/or VCP Certifications.
  3. Additional working knowledge of BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, STP, VLAN, FHRPS, SVIs, SNMP, GPOs and DFS; wireshark; scripting; and Oracle and Microsoft SQL database servers.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, departments and subordinates.  Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate across all levels of the organization; must be able to work as part of a team and be willing to learn as technology changes; intelligent, self-motivated, well organized and detail oriented; ability to supervise.  Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.  Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license.  Criminal background check required for hire.

Any higher class or level for which eligible or qualified.

Physical Requirements:  Tasks involve the ability to exert very light physical effort in sedentary to light work, involving some reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling of objects and materials.  Tasks require perception and discrimination of visual and oral communication ability.
